SW HOPE: Feed the Hungry

What is SW HOPE: Feed the Hungry?

Local Faith Organizations and Community Partners are working together to meet the needs of hungry people in Southwest Portland.

What is the need?

Over the last two years, usage of the Neighborhood House Emergency Food Box program has seen an increase of over 40% due to the decline in the economy and the increasing unemployment rate. In the last six months, Neighborhood House has distributed an average of 440 boxes a month, feeding approximately 1,400 individuals. This is a critical time for the Emergency Food Box program -- we are requesting support from the greater community to feed the most vulnerable and assist our disadvantaged neighbors, many who are experiencing particulary great need at this time.

What is the Goal?

To collect 150,000 pounds of food or the cash equivalent ($1.00 = 5 lbs.) to feed all the hungry people in Southwest Portland for three to four months.  Food collected and monetary donations will go to the Neighborhood House Emergency Food Box Program.

When will this happen?

This year's SW HOPE: Feed the Hungry campaign will kick off on February 14 and run through March 28, 2010.

SW HOPE Benefit Event - An Evening of Film and Theater
Friday, March 5, 7 p.m.
Hosted by Hillsdale Community Church 6948 SW Capitol Hwy.

Filmmakers Sue Arbuthnot and Richard Wilhelm will be on hand to present their award-winning documentary, Imagining Home, chronicling the revitalization of North Portland’s Columbia Villa into New Columbia.  An innovative collaboration between film and theater, the evening will include a performance by Portland’s Playback Theater, whose mission is to foster understanding of our universal human experience. During this interactive performance, audience members will share personal stories in response to Imagining Home, then watch them reenacted by Playback’s professional performers.

A free-will offering will be collected at the event to benefit SW HOPE.
